Thanks for the comprehensive instructions Paul.

I tried that last night and ended up with 2 copies of the SIM720 folder. One in my S drive ( new location) and one on my D drive (original location) with the exception that the original folder had a shortcut symbol with it. I thought that was OK until I realised that all 957MB (459 folders) were still there. (only Oban installed)

I'm sure I deleted the original first, but I could be wrong of course. So I'll try it again over the weekend.

I'd like to know how others (if any) have fared with it.

Hi,

The folder in your D drive with the shortcut symbol is the link to the new location and when you open it will contain the same files as it redirects to your new location but looks like its still in the original location even though its really the new location.

It doesn't use any space on the original drive thou.

Ah OK, so I did get it right then? just that when I right click on properties for that folder it tells me there's still 957MB's of files. Just can't seem to get my head round that one.  :(

yes you got it right and yes it takes some thinking to get your head round it, i double checked by testing it on a big folder that wouldn't fit on my ssd B)

If you use the symbolic link solution that I suggested earlier you have to do NOTHING as the system still thinks SIM720 folder is still on drive C: in the default location.

The fsx config remains unchanged.

All installs of new airports end up wherever you want them, D: E: F: ...... but all get installed to C: as far as the OS and flightsim is concerned.

-----

In my view ALL software should install to the default location as deemed by the software designer and us (as the end users) can do what we want to accommodate that.

Too many times installers from software publishers e.g. REX has ended up with stupidly allowing their users creating directories of all sorts of names all over the place causing havoc.  They now seem to have found an auto updater that helps but historically this has been an issue and will likely be be for SIM720 if they mess about trying to give choices to users who can't or won't solve their own HD space issues (said with respect hopefully).

BG215, I do understand your views and it would be easy for us as developers to agree. However we also want to cater for all our members requests as long as we do not cause issues as we develop. Yob points are noted and I thank you for them. Also I hope Cattz is happy with the result.
I will ensure Paul looks at your solution and advises his technical appraisal .

Yes, I'm happy to accept the alternative Barry.

However, as far as solving HD space issues as mentioned by BG2518, the purpose of adding extra drives is exactly that. It's fine if you are starting out with FSX on a large 500GB -2TB disk but some of us dinosaurs started when only small disks were available ( and were cheap enough)  and so it would mean a complete re install of all the stuff we have accumulated over the years. OK call me lazy then - I'm too long in the tooth for all that hassle and just want to enjoy my hobby now.  :)

For me, the real answer would still have been to have a choice of location for the first install then to install to that location for subsequent downloads.Disk space solved.

There are loads of ways to solve space issues.

E.G. take an image of your drive C: to any other drive then replace drive C: with say a 2TB drive, restore the image and you'll have all the space you'll need for a fair long time.

No need to re-install anything cattz.

Take a look at Acronis as a great tool for this purpose.

Plus, when you have an image you effectively have your WHOLE system backed up to 1 file !!!

All the above mentioned in the best intentions to help fellow flightsimmers BTW.

friend of mine has "hot swappable" boot drives.

I.E. has same OS on 2 drives customised to suit.

1 for flightsim and basic stuff only

2 for general pc use that includes his other half

He just plugs in the drive he wants for what he wants and has an image of both so can never loose anything or have 'er indoors faff up FSX
